The Sternberg Museum of Natural History: The Sternberg Museum is part of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) and is location on a east campus of the University. Exhibit galleries and collections are located in the same building and both focus on the natural history of the western great plains. Various events throughout the conference will take place at the Museum.
The Bricks in Downtown Hays: The bricks is the rejuvenated “old town” area of Hays. This are is loaded with restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, and drinking establishments; it is just a few blocks east of the main FHSU campus. The Ellis County Historical Museum is also located in on The Bricks. Here you can explore gallery exhibits and travel from life on the frontier to present day. The museum ground include conjoined church structures, the Hays Fire Department Museum, the Younger Harness Shop, and the Volga German Haus.
Historic Fort Hays: Established in 1865 in the land of the Cheyenne and Arapaho, the fort protected railroad workers and travelers on the Smoky Hill Trail. See the soldiers’ clothing, weapons, and personal items, including George Custer’s dumbbell forged by the fort’s blacksmith.
The Hays Regional Airport (HYS) is located just 5.5 miles southeast of the host hotel. The Hays Airport is served by United Express with daily flights to/from Denver and Chicago. Vans will be available for transporting conference attendees to and from the airport.
The Wichita Airport (ICT) has a greater selection of flights and airlines and is 2.5 hours (175 miles) from Hays. Alternatively, Denver International Airport (DEN) is 4.5 hours (330 miles) west of Hays. Stay tuned as vans may be arranged for transporting conference attendees arriving and these airports.
Hays is served by Greyhound. The Bus station is a short (3/4 mile) taxi or Uber ride from the Hampton Inn.
Hays is conveniently located on I-70. You can't miss it! Use exit 159 to get to the host hotel.
Ground Transportation in Hays:
Vans/buses will be provided free of charge to transport conference attendees to and from the host hotel to meeting site (either the Sternberg Museum on FHSU main campus). Ground transportation is also available upon request (phone call) via ACCESS buses. ACCESS buses run from 6am until 10pm and cost $1.50/one-way trip. Uber, Lyft, and Convenience Cab provide taxi services in Hays. Rental cars are available via Hertz, Enterprise, and Quality (local).
For the week of April 16-20, Hays's average high temperature is 68°F and the average low is 40°F, but weather on the Great Plains is notoriously unpredictable, so check ahead of time and plan accordingly. A shower or two would not be unusual during the week.
